How Long Does Divorce Mediation Take?

A common question people ask of me is “how long does divorce mediation in NJ take?” and the truth is, it’s really up to the both of you. Typically it takes a couple with children and a house 4 sessions but in all honesty, I’ve had couples finish in two and couples finish in 12 as it really all depends on the complexity of the issues, how prepared the parties are for each session and how well they can communicate and do what’s required of them on the outside before coming to meet with me.

That being said, the real answer to how long does divorce mediation in NJ take is “however long it takes us to resolve all the issues and craft an agreement you both feel is fair and equitable.” If you try to rush through the process, you’re only going to create issues for yourself on the back-end and find yourself in court a year or two down the road because in the interest of just getting it done, you agreed to something that in hindsight, you never really agreed with in the first place.

Like the old saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” so take it from me, carefully consider your options, don’t feel rushed and get it right the first time.
