3 Tips For An Effective Divorce Mediation
One question I am commonly asked as a divorce mediator in New Jersey is “how long will divorce mediation take?” A good rule of thumb is 4-6 sessions but there are ways you can help make things more efficient by following these 3 simple tips:
1. Be prepared – part of the reason divorce mediation in New Jersey costs less than using attorneys is the parties do some of the work. When your NJ divorce mediator asks you for something by a certain date, there’s a reason. Remember – not only do you have work to do, we do as well.
2. Be forthright – there is nothing a NJ divorce mediator hates more than having someone ask ” why do you need that” or “do I really have to give that to you?” RED FLAG!!! Like the old TV show “Lost in Space” all I hear is The Robot saying “Danger Will Robinson, Danger!” This will only delay your proceedings because yes, if I ask for it, I need it.
3. Be willing to compromise – entrenching in your position and thinking you’re going to get everything and the other party is going to have to give up everything just isn’t productive. This is called divorce mediation for a reason because it’s about compromise and negotiation. As a NJ divorce mediator it’s my job to help you both come to an agreement you both think is fair and equitable.
By following these 3 simple tips you can ensure your divorce mediation will go as smoothly as possible savings you time, money and stress in the process.
