Divorce Mediation is not a Courtroom
As a Divorce Mediator NJ, I play a variety of roles when it comes to helping couples settle their differences but if there is one role I do not play it is judge. It is important for couples to understand the role of a divorce mediator in New Jersey as based on some recent interactions I’ve had with clients, that doesn’t alwasy seem to be the case.
Certainly I will advocate for both of you and your children but I will not represent either of you like a lawyer would. Certainly I will help facilitate a conversation between you and your spouse or ex-spouse but I will not pass judgment on or rule on the legality of the solutions you create like a judge would. And I will certainly not entertain backwards looking statements and listen to each party blame the other as perhaps a mental health professional would.
Divorce Mediation is a forward looking process and one which is designed to help couples who want to come to a mutually agreeable solution, get there. It is not a place to air past grievances, prove who’s right or wrong, good or bad and air all past ills that brought you to my office in the first place. If you’re looking to fight and want a public forum to espouse what an evil person the other party is, please get an attorney, spend $200,000 and fight it out in court. Mediation is reserved for the solutions oriented only!
