Divorce is not a new year’s resolution

As a divorce mediator in NJ, I get the sense that there definitely is a pattern to the number of inquiries I get at certain times of year. Commonly the divorce rate spikes around January (for whatever reason) but no matter what time of year it is, the decision to divorce is often a long and difficult process and not one to be taken lightly. And while it may seem like an odd thing coming from a divorce mediator, at this time of year, I would ask you to please take the time to read the articles on our site and really give it some thought if you’re ready to proceed.

People often say to me “Joe, in your business you must be pro-divorce because that means you’ll have more clients” to which I quickly reply “I’m not pro divorce, I’m anti-conflict.” Using divorce mediation to peacefully and efficiently resolve all of the issues surrounding your divorce is far and away the most civilized way to go about it. Nothing good comes of hiring an attorney and going through a long drawn out battle. It’s not good for you and it’s not good for your kids, and you wind up with the exact same settlement no matter which way you slice it so why would use anything besides divorce mediation?

So in this season of New Year’s resolutions, if you’re not 100% sure that you’re ready to divorce, do yourself a favor and try a different resolution like learning an instrument or exercising. But if you’ve given it some thought and are ready to proceed, the please give me a call at (908) 864-2177 after the first of the year and I’ll be glad to help you and your spouse work towards your future.
